Escape to the natural beauty of Shropshire. Head to the north of the county to the historic village of Whixall and join us for unrivalled countryside splendour and you will find our special marina – a truly hidden gem. Surrounded by uninterrupted fields and framed by mighty oak trees, we are situated on the Prees Branch of the Llangollen Canal
Our picturesque marina provides the perfect home for our residential moorers and also leisure moorers wanting a secure and well-serviced base for their boats. The marina is a gateway to some of the finest canal cruises, including access to the breathtaking Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, one of the most amazing feats of waterway engineering, perched 126 feet high above the Dee Valley.
For landlubbers looking for a truly peaceful and memorable holiday, we offer luxury accommodation ranging from one to four bedrooms, plus stunning canalside lodges and shepherds huts for those wanting to get even closer to nature. We also have five motorhome and camper van pitches, also canalside, and located next to a dedicated shower block.
For canal cruising holidays, Pea Green Boats presents four luxury boats, popular with both families and couples, many who return each year to enjoy a host of spectacular canal cruises, easily accessible from our marina.
Our on-site cafe is a firm favourite with our local community and visitors alike who enjoy a warm welcome from our café team. Open seven days a week, the café also boasts an outdoor, covered terrace and is the perfect spot to enjoy a snack, a meal or coffee and cake, whatever the weather. And our picturesque village green, located next to the café, offers a grandstand seat to take in the tranquil pace of the marina and its beautiful wildlife. Our resident swan ‘Sid’ who has been enjoying life and lots of attention at the marina for over 20 years, is often seen parading his latest brood of cygnets in the marina basin!
We love to welcome dogs to our café too
Finally, we have to mention the stunning, natural environment on our doorstep – a wealth of natural resources, ideal for walkers and their four-legged friends. Our dedicated pathway takes you directly onto the canal towpath (please ask for our walks’ leaflet). A short stroll will take you to Whixall Moss, part of the world-renowned Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve and the habitat of several rare species. Created more than 10,000 years ago as the glaciers that covered much of Britain receded, the Marches Mosses are one of the largest raised peat bogs in Britain and one of the rarest habitats on earth and an enormous carbon store, holding more carbon acre for acre than forest does. It’s a haven for plants and wildlife that thrive in the acidic peat. Many of these are seen in very few other places on earth. A ‘Mammoth Tower’ overlooking the moss provides a birds-eye view of this exceptional and memorable landscape, and is definitely not to be missed.
Further along the canal, ornithologists can enjoy a visit to the Charles Sinker Fields Bird Hide, named in honour of the passionate conservationist who recognised the unique nature of the meres and mosses of Shropshire, and who campaigned for their protection. Charles Sinker Fields is one of the best sites for wildfowl and wetland birds in North Shropshire, and home to curlews, lapwings and many more dabblers and waders.
